About
I am Ed Johnson, a resident of Mattoon, Illinois since 1976. I was raised in Westfield, Illinois, graduating from Westfield High School in 1965. I sincerely appreciate your consideration of my candidacy for the Office of Sheriff, Coles County.

Statement of Candidacy
With a lifetime in law enforcement, I have the knowledge and the experience, both as a law-enforcement officer and as an administrator, to effectively and efficiently serve the citizens of Coles County. I have a common sense approach and nearly 28 years of experience to advance the Department and serve the community. One of my main objectives as Sheriff will be to maintain an open-door policy with the citizens of Coles County. As a matter of community policing, I want the citizens of Coles County to let me know what they need and want from the Sheriff’s Department.
As Sheriff, I will focus on making the Coles County Sheriff’s Department one of the best professional law-enforcement agencies in the State of Illinois. Additionally, within the facility itself, I will focus on staff and officer safety and will ensure that inmates are treated in a humane manner.
When elected, I will implement a fiscally responsible budget by eliminating unnecessary spending and actively pursue state and federal grants for training and equipment. I will be a full-time Sheriff, leading by example and working beside the men and women of the Coles County Sheriff’s Department to improve morale and efficiency. I will also work to enhance working relationships with other city, county, state, and federal agencies. I will be a hands-on Sheriff for the citizens of Coles County.
